Despite attempts by casino developers, Ohio legislation is unlikely to allow 24 hour liquor service or free alcoholic drinks to gamblers.
The House Democrats plan to introduce a measure in the coming weeks prohibiting an extended liquor license to the states four casinos. The casinos would be restricted to the liquor licenses that exist in current law.
Legislation is expected to have licensing standards in place and a casino control commission created by early June to oversee how gaming facilities recently voted into law will be operated.
“Of the states around us, none allow 24-hour liquor operations, and very few allow complimentary drinks,” said Rep. Todd Book, D-McDermott. “I think we are going to be very similar to what we are seeing in other states.”
Bob Tenenbaum, a spokesman for the casino developers, said the companies sought the liquor exemption to better compete with neighboring states that allow smoking. Ohio casinos will not be exempt from the statewide smoking ban.
“It was basically a starting point in the discussions,” he said. “It’s something that the casino operators would like to see in the legislation, but in the end it’s up to the General Assembly.”
A group of Senate Republicans also has been working on a draft of casino legislation which also does not include a 24-hour liquor permit or the ability to offer complimentary drinks.
