Internet casino operators from two online sports gambling rings that took in nearly $178 million in bets around the country in the past three years have been arrested.
Prosecutors charged 38 collectors, agents and bookies from all across the nation on Wednesday on charges including money laundering, promoting gambling and conspiracy.
The investigation, which centered in New York, Florida, Arizona, Louisiana and Nevada was led by the New York Police Department’s organized crime division and took three years of compiling evidence before the arrests.
Three New York City employees, a firefighter, sanitation worker and a highway repairman, were arrested in the sting.
In Louisiana, six people including William Bryant III, an employee of the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets were taken into custody.
The Hornets quickly released a statement after hearing about the arrest saying that Bryant acted along and the team had nothing to do with the charges.
Law enforcement officials said that a large amount of cash and millions in property seized after more than a dozen search warrants were executed in five states.
