The State Legislature has rejected casino gambling seven times in the past 14 years, but with Massachusetts hit hard by rising unemployment and a chronic budget deficit, lawmakers continue to debate adding casinos.
The Mass. House of Representatives will taking another crack at possibly expanding gaming this week. Legislators will begin debating Speaker Robert DeLeo’s proposal to allow two resort casinos and adding up to 750 slot machines to the state’s four race tracks.
DeLeo’s main opponent in this issue is Governor Deval Patrick. The governor opposes the addition of the slot machines at racetracks, but has stopped short of saying he would veto a bill that contains them.
“I’m shooting to get this bill passed this week and I feel confident that we will,” DeLeo said.
Voter polls have shown a lot of public support for casinos but not so much for slots at the racetracks, two of which are in DeLeo’s district.
Nationally, 37 states have legalized slot parlors. Twelve of those have commercial casinos, while twelve more have so-called racinos at tracks, and 29 have Indian casinos or a combination of Indian and other casinos.
