Sheriff’s deputies in the Long Star State have shut down what they are calling an illegal gambling ring housed in several Midland County locations.
Police seized more than $37,000 in cash and 240 machines used in the operation over the weekend. Warrants were issued Saturday evening around 10 p.m. to businesses where six detectives had been working undercover for the past three months.
Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter said the businesses were eight-liner establishments. Eight-liners, which look and play like slot machines, are legal only when played for amusement. Many small-time operators frequently offer cash prizes for the games.
According to law enforcement, this is not legal.
Painter said his officers received cash payments of around two to three hundred dollars on more than one occasion by employees at the businesses during the undercover operation.
When the warrants were served deputies reported that one establishment had nearly 100 people inside playing.
The Sheriff’s office says that this is the second alleged gambling ring bust in the past year. Painter believes that some of those involved in the recent sting are associated with those arrested last summer.
