Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has filed a lawsuit against “Pocket Kings, Ltd.,” an online betting business based in Dublin, Ireland. Pocket Kings operates under the slightly more recognizable name “Full Tilt Poker.”

The Democratic governor is using an obscure century-old law that allows persons to recover gambling losses from illegal gaming.

According to the governor’s office, the state feels compelled to enforce the anti-casino law because Kentuckians were losing their money to what they feel is an illegal operation.

Some critics of the state’s case feel that this may be a mere ploy by Beshear to gain revenue instead of a way to protect citizens.

In fact, the governor’s office says that no private citizens would recoup funds if Kentucky wins, rather any and all recovered damages will go to the commonwealth.

It is important to note that Kentucky’s attorney general, Jack Conway, decided not to take on the case despite Beshear’s request for him to do so.

Beshear’s office confirmed that the law firm Hurt, Crosbie & May, a Lexington, Ky., firm has been brought in to handle the matter.
