With more delays looming with Philadelphia’s Foxwoods casino project, State Sen. John Wozniak, of Johnstown, feels Pennsylvania should to stop wasting time and and transfer the state casino license to a gambling parlor in Cambria or Somerset County.
Back in 2006, the Gaming Control Board gave one of its five stand-alone casino licenses to Foxwoods for a casino in south Philadelphia. However the project has repeatedly stalled due to a lack of finances, location problems and neighborhood opposition.
The Nevada based casino owner, Steve Wynn, was slated to supply enough funds to build the casino by late 2012, but his unexpectedly withdrawal last week has left the Foxwoods project in a very uncertain position.
“The casino has encountered so many location and funding difficulties that the license should be revoked and reissued,” said Wozniak. “The casino would be strongly supported by our business community and residents.”
His projected location would be about 70 miles east of a casino in Pittsburgh and 150 miles west of Harrisburg.
Wozniak’s plan could become a reality as the board has given Foxwoods until May 2011 to open and that deadline seems almost impossible to meet at this point.
