Things are looking very good for the gambling expansion in Florida as a 20-year deal between the Seminole Indians and the state won approval Thursday in the Florida Senate.

The Compact that passed 29-9 now only needs House approval as Gov. Charlie Crist, who negotiated the agreement, said he would sign the bill into law.

This marks the third time in three years that Crist and the Seminoles have agreed on a compact.

However, the State Supreme Court rejected the first deal because the governor tried to implement it without the Legislature’s approval and in Crist’s second attempt, a House committee rejected the compact because it allowed more expansion than lawmakers were comfortable with.

“Let us basically put this issue to rest,” said the sponsor, Sen. Dennis Jones, R-Seminole.

The compact also is subject to approval by the U.S. Interior Department, which oversees Indian affairs.
