One day after Massachusetts Speaker Robert A. DeLeo’s casino bill cleared the House by a decisive margin, it’s now the Senate’s turn to tackle the question of casino gambling in the Bay State.
However, the Senate is in no rush and will be taking it slow. They say that they will hold “round-table discussions” on gambling later this month and then craft their own bill. They have no plans to debate or vote on a plan until June.
Stanley Rosenberg, the Senate’s gambling point-man, said that senators have no intention of taking up the House’s plan, rather, they will draw up their own legislation.
The House’s plan would license two casinos in the state and up to 750 slots at each racetrack. The slots are expected to emerge as the major point of conflict between the House and Senate.
“We’re going to build the bill from the ground up, with the members all participating,” Rosenberg said.
Even Senate President Therese Murray, who supports casinos, seemed to have little sense of urgency on the matter.
“We haven’t even discussed gaming as of yet,” Murray said. “We have not talked with the members about gaming at all.”
Murray hopes to have a bill on the governor’s desk by July 31st.
