The opening of the $650 million Encore Resort and Casino adjacent to sister resort, Wynn Macau has been postponed to honor earthquake victims.

On April 14 a 6.9 earthquake struck China’s Yushu County in Qinghai province leaving more than 2,000 dead and 12,000 injured.

Wynn Resorts had scheduled a firework display specially designed by the world renowned Phil Grucci, who also orchestrated the 2006 opening fireworks for Wynn Macau, to commemorate the event on April 21. However the nation has designated that day as a day of remembrance.

Celebratory activities will commence on April 22 to open the boutique hotel featuring over 400 luxury suites and villas, two restaurants, a bar, three retail outlets, a spa and casino.

The gaming facility has been designed to cater to “high rollers”.

Wynn has also petitioned the Macau government for 52 acres of land on the Cotai Strip to develop a third resort and casino with approximately 450 gambling tables, if approved the project could open as early as 2013.
