The Calder Casino & Race Course will begin its 40th thoroughbred racing season today with a nine-race program and slot machines.
Parent company Churchill Downs Inc is hoping that the new source of revenue will help bolster a financial rebound for its racing product.
The feature eighth race is the $100,000 Miami Mile Handicap (Grade 3) on turf for 4-year-olds and up, marking the 24th running and one of the traditional stakes on Calder’s schedule that runs through January 3.
The tracks $85 million casino officially opened on January 22 with over 1,000 Las Vegas style slot machines approximately 100 feet from the grandstand.
Under the terms of an agreement with the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, Calder has guaranteed to contribute approximately $4.8 million in gaming revenue to race purses annually through 2012.
John Marshall, Calder’s vice president and general manager for racing operations said that it should help provide “a consistent revenue stream” for trainers and owners.
The Miami Mile is the first of 50 stakes scheduled at Calder this season. The highlights will include the Summit of Speed, with sprint stakes on July 10 and the Festival of the Sun, with seven stakes on October 16.
