The Kansas Lottery Commission has reopened the bidding process for the license to develop a state-owned casino in Sumner County.
The commission has set in place a July 22nd deadline for interested parties to summit their plans after developers of a proposed Chisholm Creek Casino Resort near Mulvane backed out earlier this month.
Chisholm Creek was to be a joint venture between Foxwoods Development Co. and Lakes Entertainment Inc. They were forced to withdraw their application to build the casino in Sumner County near Mulvane when Gov. Mark Parkinson denied its request to extend a key deadline.
This is going to be Kansas’ third attempt at a south-central zone casino project. A 2007 state law authorized one state-owned casino in each of four specific zones around the state.
Casino giant, Harrah’s Entertainment backed out of their plan for a casino, also near Mulvane, back in November of 2008, citing the poor economy.
Earlier this month, the Hollywood Casino Project at Kansas Speedway announced that they would be breaking ground April 30th on their casino’s first phase. It is slated to include a 100,000-square-foot casino floor with enough room for 2,300 slot machines and 86 table games, a lounge, several dining areas and entertainment complex.
