City officials in Myrtle Beach welcomed the arrival of a new casino ship to the docks of Little River this week.
The “Aquasino” has taken the place of the old Sun Cruz boat, which filed for bankruptcy last December.
The vessel is owned by former partners in the Sun Cruz operation and will keep the boat bearing the SunCruz name temporarily.
The owners hope to have the vessel operational by May 1, however realistically they do not expect to start booking passengers until mid month.
New gambling machines, neon lighting, and fancy design work are the finishing touches to what owners believe will make the boat a huge success for the area.
“It’s probably the nicest boat of its kind in America right now,” owner, Robert Weisberg said. “There’s never been a boat like this on the interior.”
The county is hopeful that the new gaming boat will bring back approximately $1 million in lost revenue since the December departure.
County Administrator John Weaver said the new boat, will pay a $7-per-passenger fee in lieu of taxes for five years and then the county can charge up to $3 per customer for five years after that before a new contract would need to be negotiated.
The new owners already have given the county an advance check for $100,000, Weaver said.
