New Jersey Governor Chris Christie received a letter protesting a proposal for racetrack slot machines that is being considered in Trenton.

Sen. Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, wrote the Governor’s Office to protest the plan former Harrah’s Resort executive David Hanlon has handed to a group of the governor’s advisers for video lottery terminals and a possible hotel at the Meadowlands racecourse.

Van Drew’s concerns stem from what he feels will be a devastating affect on Atlantic City’s casino industry if the slot machines are brought into the Meadowlands.

“The dismal state of the national economy has caused further hardship, resulting in a series of setbacks to economic development projects,” said Van Drew. “This year alone, two major casino operators pulled out of Atlantic City, while a developer was left scrambling to secure funding to complete a project after losing financial backing.”

The Senator facing a tough road ahead.

The state is looking at a a one-time $600 million payment to install 5,000 video lottery terminals at the Meadowlands Racetrack.
