To make way for incoming table games, officials at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh want to cut 126 under-performing slot machines.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has to approve such a move. The Casino needs permission from the board to drop below the current level of 3,000 slot machines because state law requires casinos to maintain the number of slots in place as of Oct. 1, 2009.
Table games are taxed at a lower rate than slot machines.
There are two distinct to the issue.
Some critics, including Republican state Rep. Mike Turzai, says fewer slot machines means less tax revenue. While supporters maintain that casinos should be allowed to make changes to increase profits, thus increasing tax revenue.
Rivers Casino opened in August and features their 3,000 slots machines, nine distinctive restaurants, and a riverside amphitheater.
The board hoped to hear public opinion on the reduction of slots and the addition of table games, like poker and blackjack, however no one showed up at a public meeting Monday in Pittsburgh to speak in favor of or against the proposal.
