Long Island’s Shinnecock Indian Nation could be looking at a site near the Nassau Coliseum for a possible casino project.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano says preliminary talks have begun with the Indians about opening a gambling casino near the dilapidated home of the New York Islanders.
The aging coliseum has been the center of debate over how best to redevelop the arena and the surrounding area. For several years, Islanders owner Charles Wang has been stymied in his bid to build a $3.7 billion development of the 77 acres surrounding the team’s home.
These two ideas could be combined and made a reality in the future.
The Shinnecocks are expecting final approval this spring for federal recognition in order to be eligible to run a gaming facility in the United States.
