Dan Gilbert has announced this morning that his planned Cleveland Casino expected to open in late 2011 or early 2012 will be delayed by at least one year.
While there is no firm timeline established between Gilbert and the city, that date has now been pushed back until mid 2013.
Gilbert said that problems with acquiring the land needed to build the casino are at the root of the delay, although negotiations to purchase the site are still ongoing between Dan Gilbert’s Rock Venture LLC team and Forest City Enterprises, owner of the land behind Tower City.
The specific site was included in the constitutional amendment voted into law last November by a statewide ballot.
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson says he is not overly concerned about a possible delay in collecting gaming revenue and is still hopeful a temporary casino could open next year.
Rock Ventures has been given approval to open a temporary casino in the Higbees building until the $600 million casino complex is completed however there has been no word from Gilbert if plans are in the works.
The delay will put the Cleveland facility as the last of four Ohio casinos to officially open.
