80 people are soon to join the ranks of Pennsylvania’s unemployed, as Las Vegas Sands Corp announces that they will begin laying off employees “across the board” at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem.
The casino opened its door with 3,000 slot machines less than a year ago, however so far revenue has not been “reaching expectations”.
When opened gaming operations were expected to bring in $347 million to $465 million; according to the company’s recent earnings report based on revenue from the first quarter of 2010 it appears the casino will likely bring in less than $250 million this year.
Sands President Robert DeSalvio said workers are being terminated in every department but most are food services workers in the four restaurants run by the casino.
The hopes is that these employees will be able to return when the casino hires staff to operate the 89 table games opening this summer and the hotel expansion is complete in May 2011.
“It’s unfortunate that we have to do any reduction,” DeSalvio said today. “But we will be hiring 400 to 500 people in the next year, and everyone impacted today will have first consideration for those jobs. Hopefully, most of them back to work very soon.”
