The state of Maine is making sure lobbyist know they mean business.

The states Ethics Commission has charged Peter Martin, an advocate for Black Bear Entertainment group, with violating state lobbying and campaign finance laws.

The anti-gambling group CasinosNO! filed the complaint that Martin had been engaging in lobbying activities prior to registering as a lobbyist and also failed to disclose that he was paid $50,000 for his efforts.

Dan Walker, an attorney for Black Bear entertainment, confirmed that Martin’s consulting group did receive $50,000, a payment that was not disclosed in Black Bear Entertainment’s political action committee report in January.

Martin has spent several hours at the State House, when lawmakers were considering crafting a competing ballot measure to permit gaming tables at Bangor’s Hollywood Slots and also allow slot machines for two of Maine’s Indian tribes.

The commission plans to hold a follow-up meeting to determine what financial penalties should be assessed.
