The New York State Lottery has released its year-end report for the state’s eight racinos which hit a record $1 billion in revenue for the first time since slots were permitted in the state in 2001.

Despite the shaky economy and failed plans to install slot machines at Aqueduct Racetrack, combined casino winnings jumped 7.5% at video lottery terminals at the upstate racetracks.

The Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway, which opened in 2006, saw a higher net win than all the other gaming facilities combined with revenue up 11%.

Jennifer Givner, a lottery division spokeswoman, attributed the increase to gamblers opting to stay within the area during the recession rather than traveling to casinos in Connecticut, Atlantic City or Las Vegas.
