The general contractor suing casino developer MGM Mirage for $500 million in outstanding construction costs for the development of Las Vegas City Center is looking for any method available to pressure the gaming company to pay up.
Perini Building Co and a coalition of subcontractors have taken out newspaper and internet advertisements to place pressure on MGM. Perini has also written a nine page letter to Governor Jim Gibbons, asking for him to investigate MGM’s outstanding debt on the project.
The letter stated that $5.79 billion of the $6.29 billion contract has been paid, but the remaining $500 million is owed to subcontractors of which some are minority and women businesses as requested by MGM.
“Our issues are not with those firms. Our issues are with Perini,” Jim Murren said. “Those firms have signed contracts with the general contractor.”
Murren told investors during a conference call this week that he hopes the issue will be resolved quickly through the court system.
“People are upset and we empathize with them,” Murren said. “It’s an unfortunate situation, which is why we offered to take this to arbitration so it could be resolved quickly. We have a very different position than Perini has, and that will be fully fleshed out in court. We have taken the high road and they have resorted to theatrics in the media to express their point of view.”
