With the Lone Star State facing close to an $18 billion budget deficit, Texas lawmakers many be looking to another gambling expansion to make up for some of the state’s revenue problems.

Texas House Speaker Joe Straus told legislators on Tuesday that it is imperative they try to close the budget gap without passing new taxes.

“Every cost savings idea must be on the table,” said Straus, a Republican from San Antonio.

Lawmakers had expected a shortfall of the neighborhood of $11 billion over the next two-years, however Appropriations Chairman Jim Pitts, puts that number at closer to $18 billion.

Pitts said lawmakers should consider casino gambling as one way to fill the hole.

Pitts figures an expansion of gambling would require a constitutional amendment. That means a two-thirds vote of lawmakers and voter approval on a statewide ballot. He feels that casino gambling could bring in $1 billion in the next two-year budget period and $4 billion annually after that.

“I’m going to look at every revenue enhancer that we can get,” Pitts said.
