The New York Lottery has said that they are ready to re-open bids to run slot machines at the Aqueduct Racetrack, following the rejection of the governors’ previous choice and the onset of state and federal probes.
Governor Patterson had come under attack after selecting Aqueduct Entertainment Group for the lucrative contract, on the suspicion that the choice was made to assist one of Patterson’s political allies.
This time, the Governor will not be involved in the selection process, instead the winning bid will be selected by a committee led by the Lottery director and staffed by Lottery workers and a representative of the state Division of Budget.
For years, New York governors have tried and failed to offer gamblers slot machines at Aqueduct Racetrack, in Queens. However $300 million from Aqueduct slots has been included in the state’s initial budget plan which now has a deficit topping $9 billion.
The committee has been given a deadline of 12 weeks to select a bid and make its recommendation.
“All bids will be made public once a winner is selected, and the Request for Proposals will be posted on websites,” the New York Lottery said in a statement.
It is unclear yet, if the previous bidders will re-submit proposals. Those bidders included SL Green Realty Corp with Seminole Hard Rock Casinos, MGM Mirage, Harrah’s Entertainment, Penn National Gaming, Wynn Resorts Ltd, Delaware North and The Peebles Corporation, as well as the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority and the Victoria Racing Club.
