Six local governments are looking for a portion of revenue earned from Michigan’s FireKeepers Casino.
According to requests filed with the local casino revenue board the Calhoun County Road Commission is claiming they are owed over $330 thousand for road work near the casino. Marshall, Emmett Township, Calhoun County, the Calhoun Intermediate School District and Harper Creek Community Schools have also filed claims for money.
The Local Revenue Sharing Board is scheduled to discuss the requests later this month and must vote unanimously to approve any request, according to a state-tribe compact.
Terms of the tribal compact call for 2% of annual slot machine profits to be but in trust of the Local Revenue Sharing Board, who handles disbursements to local governments.
Twenty-four local governments were deemed eligible to seek reimbursement for costs incurred between Dec. 3, 1998 and Dec. 31, 2009. Out of the remaining $1.93 million in the account after requests are paid, 80% is divided among governments that are losing tax revenue because of the casino. The remaining money is disbursed to governments with jurisdiction near the casino or reservation.
