The owner of a historic West Virginia resort says that the cost of the underground casino has grown more than four times its initial budget.
Jim Justice bought the White Sulphur Springs hotel, now the Greenbrier Casino and Resort, out of bankruptcy in May 2009 for $20.1 million.
After the sale Justice began construction of a 50,000 square foot casino, underground, as not to disturb the resorts picturesque scenery.
However, the size of the casino as grown to 102,000 square feet to add additional shops and restaurants, raising the costs to $80 million.
“It’s gotten bigger substantially,” Justice said “It’s going to be spectacular.”
The full-scale casino will have 320 slot machines and 38 table games such as poker and blackjack.
The casino was initially scheduled to open April 1 but because of the growth and growing cost was delayed. Justice says the gaming facility will open on July 2, just three weeks before the resort hosts a PGA Tour golf tournament.
The Greenbrier has an agreement with the PGA to host the tournament through 2015.
Additional plans for the property include the construction of a $40 million “entertainment theater” that would host nationally known entertainments; Justice says that a timeline for the project has not been set yet.
