Rhode Island lawmakers will meet next week to debate a bill that would ask voters to approve expanded gambling in the state.
The bill proposes a constitutional amendment to allow the state’s two slot parlors, Twin River and Newport Grand, to transition into a full scale casino offering table games.
If the statehouse agrees to move the bill forward, the measure will be placed on the next ballot and will be required to pass both statewide and in Newport or Lincoln, where the gaming properties are located.
Similar measures have been unsuccessful in the past, In 2006 voters rejected a proposal that would have permitted the Narragansett Indian Tribe to partner with Harrah’s Entertainment to bring a casino to West Warwick.
The House Finance Committee is scheduled to consider the bill on May 20.
