Although the Foxwoods Casino is still far from becoming a reality, the SugarHouse Casino has placed the final steel beam on what will be Philadelphia’s first gambling hall.
On Friday developers, union workers, planners and city officials, including Mayor Nutter celebrated the milestone with a “topping” ceremony, a union ritual to bestow good luck and good fortune upon the completed infrastructure.
The 60,000 square foot casino will feature more than 1,600 slot machines and is expected to open in mid September.
Later this month the casino will petition the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board for approval to also include 42 table games such as poker and blackjack.
Wendy Hamilton, the project’s general manager said that is approved, the gaming tables will be in place when the casino opens its doors.
“We did make some modifications and that was because our building was designed before table games were legalized. We reduced our number of slots just slightly and that will allow us to put table games out there for our players.” Hamilton said.
