The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has signed a new deal with city officials to develop a casino on a 300 acre site in Fall River.
The tribe has opted to move the location of its proposed casino from Middleborough to Fall River because of the location available.
However before the tribe can begin construction, the Massachusetts House of Representatives must approve a bill being considered to expand gambling in the state.
While the terms of the bill will allow for two destination casinos to be built in the state as well as grant the state’s four race tracks rights to install slot machines, the tribe will not have to compete for those gaming licenses.
Federal law authorizes tribes to operate gambling facilities, on sovereign land, as long as gambling is legal in the state, although the Wampanoag’s would have to reach a tribal compact with the state.
The massive gaming complex complete with three hotels and a shopping mall will break ground immediately following final passage of the expanded gaming legislation.
