While developers and some Las Vegas lawmakers may feel that a new sports arena is needed near the strip, casino and arena operator, MGM Mirage says they are in “strong opposition” of the plans.

The Clark County Commissioners meet on Tuesday to discuss three proposals to develop arenas, all of which require public financing.

One group is proposing to build an arena on the former Wet ‘n Wild site near the Sahara hotel-casino and is requesting funding from the county’s Redevelopment Authority, which commissioners have mothballed.

The second is looking to develop on land owned by Harrah’s Entertainment just east of the strip, while the third hopes to win approval for a site on Las Vegas Boulevard, both of which will require special sales tax to finance.

The city of Las Vegas is also planning to build an arena on city-owned land downtown that could potentially compete with the pending arena as well as the counties other five existing arenas.

While the commission heard from the developers and Las Vegas officials, MGM Mirage was the only one to speak up against the plan.
While the say they do not oppose the competition they feel allowing public financing for the project gives them an unfair competitive advantage.

“None of the arena proponents today is willing to take the same risk MGM Mirage, Mandalay Resort Group, Boyd Gaming and Coast Casinos made when they built their own permanent arenas using 100 percent privately funded dollars,” said Bill Hornbuckle, Chief Marketing Officer for MGM. “None of the proponents are willing to build an arena unless the public shoulders the risk.”
