Dutch security officials are saying that they are taking a threat to soccer fans very seriously after a suspected terrorist arrested in Iraq has claimed that he considered an attack on Dutch or Danish fans at the World Cup in South Africa.

The potential threat was discovered after Abdullah Azam Saleh Al-Qahtani arrested in Iraq on May 3rd. Al-Qahtani was found in possession of a hand written note detailing plans to avenge perceived insults to Islam.

“We discussed the possibility of taking revenge for the insults of the prophet by attacking Denmark and Holland,” said Al-Qahtani. “If we were not able to reach the teams, then we’d target the fans.”

Danes are considered potential targets in part due to the publication of cartoons featuring Islam’s prophet Mohammed, while Dutch citizens are considered to be at risk due to an anti-Islam film made by right-wing Dutch politician Geert Wilders.

South Africa has trained 44,000 extra police for the World Cup. However, Dutch anti-terrorism office and Danish authorities said they aren’t yet planning any new security measures.
