Apparently, Mississippi casino gambling is recording gains to start 2009. Tax Commission records show revenue totaling $221 million in January as compared to the $204.3 million they record in December.
That’s great news for an industry that employs more than 30,000 workers in the state of Mississippi. With the nation’s unemployment numbers rising to their highest in years, Casino employees can feel a little better about their job security.
Gulf Coast casinos took in a little over $99 million to bring in the new year, while casinos along the Mississippi River grossed almost $122 million for the month of January.
Casino revenue is measured by the net amount of dollars won by casinos from their players and is not considered gross earnings. Other areas like hotel, restaurant, and bar revenues are recorded separately.
