The Massachusetts State Senate is getting set to introduce its proposed gambling bill allowing three resort-style casinos, but hold true to the ban on slot machines at racetracks.
According to the plan, the state would be setting aside one of the three possible casinos projects for the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe who last month struck a deal with the city of Fall River to develop a casino in their city.
Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell said the plan is for not just a casino, but an entire entertainment complex that would include; the casino, three hotels, a shopping mall, convention facilities, a showroom and a spa.
The state is not just looking for the taxable revenue that the casino could be bringing in to the budget, but lawmakers are also looking at other issues like unemployment.
“We want the most jobs possible in the construction phase. We want the most jobs possible in the operating phase,” said Sen. Stanley Rosenberg. “If you want to maximize jobs, you want resort-style casinos.”
