Billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson’s Sands Corporation has announced a May 22nd opening date for it’s newest multi-million dollar casino in Bethlehem, PA. The $743 million Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, equipped with 3,000 slot machines, an electronic table game area and four dining options, will open it’s doors in time for Memorial Day.
This will mark Pennsylvania’s eighth casino opening since gambling was legalized in the state and comes despite the companies report of heavy fourth quarter losses in 2008. Adelson hopes to pull millions of potential customers from nearby New York and New Jersey. He also counts on what he calls, “the novelty of a new place” to draw in business.
Adelson expects that by the time his new casino has lost it’s luster as the new kid on the block, the Bethlehem will have established a regular base of clientele and the nations economic downturn will have leveled off enough for the casino to remain profitable.
“By the time we cycle through all the potential customers, it’ll be years in the future,” Adelson said. “Everybody’s hoping and praying that by that time, the economy will be better again.”
