The South Florida Seminole Indian tribe has been accused of violating federal laws for improper spending on jewelry, cars, travel and other personal expenses.

The National Indian Gaming Commission has filed charges claiming that six members of the tribe received gambling profits through company purchases that exceeded their allotted share under federal law.

The tribe faces fines of up to $25,000 for each violation and could be forced to close casino operations. The tribe currently operates the Hard Rock hotel and casinos in Florida including Hollywood, Tampa, Coconut Creek and Immokalee.

In a statement released by tribal authorities, the tribal council is “reviewing the notice of violation and is intent on correcting their violations.”

The tribe has 30 days to appeal the commission’s action.

This marks the second time the tribe has violated these laws. Less than 10 years ago, former Chief James E. Billie admitted to embezzling $2.7 million and transferring the cash to an overseas Internet gaming site.
