The Burns Paiute Tribe has proposed bringing a casino resort to Ontario, Oregon that may include a convention center, hotel, water park, and casino.
City Leaders are undecided if they will support the destination resort although the decision is up to the federal government.
The tribe is looking into making a complete land swap under federal legislation that if approved would place land in Ontario into federal trust for the tribe.
“If the federal government approve the land swap—it can happen. Ontario City Council has no authority to stop it,” says Mayor Dominick.
The community, however is weighing the pro’s and con’s.
Mayor Dominick says city leaders have to “think what’s best for the city and creating jobs in a weak economy would be a benefit.”
But on the other hand “The city of Ontario has over 600 hotel rooms available and they’re never full. If a new hotel comes along, what does that mean for our local businesses?” says Mayor Dominick.
The areas closest casinos are in Pendleton, Oregon and Jackpot, Nevada.
