This week in Rhode Island, legislation to allow full-scale, otherwise know as Vegas-style, casino gambling is headed for another committee hearing.
The State House Finance Committee will be discussing the bill that would allow Rhode Island’s two licensed slot parlors to operate as traditional casinos.
The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
Currently, Twin River and Newport Grand have video lottery machines and virtual black jack, but the new legislation would allow them to offer table games like the ones found at Las Vegas casinos.
Like so many other states, Rhode Island has been hit hard by the recession.
Supporters feel that full-fledged gambling would bring in much-needed revenue, create more job opportunities and induce a boost to the state’s economy. They also point to Rhode Island’s need to keep pace with neighboring states, like Massachusetts, and their push for gambling expansion.
Some lawmakers have estimated that converting Twin River and the Newport Grand to racinos could generate roughly $300 million a year for the state in tax revenue.
