The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG) is seeking a new operator for a resort casino for the first time in nearly a decade.
The OLG will issue a formal request for interested bidders to begin the pre-qualification process this fall as they look for a new operator for one of the region’s largest employers, the Casino Rama.
The contract with the current operator, Penn National Gaming expires on July 31, 2011. Penn has overseen gaming operations at the casino since purchasing Carnival in April 2001. Carnival held the contract since the casino opened in 1996.
OLG spokesperson Rui Brum said that this is the first time in a decade that the OLG has had to issue a request to select an operator for a resort casino.
“The market’s become increasingly complex” over the years, he said, noting the changes to the tourism sector, gaming market and economy in general.
Jenna Hunter, media relations manager at the casino, said the situation is “no reflection on Penn National’s operations.”
“It’s a very routine process when dealing with contracts of this size and when you’re looking to provide value to the Ontario taxpayer,” she said.
