Just in time for the start of World Cup Soccer play, France has officially opened it’s Internet gambling market.
According to local officials, eleven companies have been given seventeen licenses and been registered by the French government to conduct online betting on sports and horse races. Internet poker is also permitted under the new regulations.
“There were 35 requests for licences and we have retained 17 at this stage, said Jean-Francois Vilotte, the president of France’s gaming regulating body. “None have been formally rejected.”
Most sites will be up and running by the end of the month, however those who have been approved for sporting bets could start their activities as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday, in time for the World Cup.
