Gary Indiana Mayor Rudy Clay has joined the City Council’s fight to collect unpaid taxes from Majestic Star casinos, despite pending court action.

The City Council passed a resolution earlier this year to request the Indiana Gaming Commission to not renew the casino licenses on the two riverboat casinos until the $22 million in overdue property taxes are paid.

According to public records the value of the two casinos rose to $110 million in 2006 more than double the $49 million in 2005, and has $21.9 million in taxes overdue.

The increase prompted Majestic Star to file an appeal with the Assessor’s office claiming that they were overtaxed and over assessed. If the appeal is won, then the county would be required to refund some of the taxes already paid.

Last month Majestic paid approximately $2 million towards its total tax bill.

“In a nutshell, we’ve paid everything that’s due,” general manager, Larry Buck said. “Obviously, the remainder is going through the normal course of the appeals process.”
