While lawmakers in the Massachusetts State House continue to debate the issue of casino gambling on Beacon Hill, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority sits and waits.
In fact, they have been waiting since 2007 when the Mohegan Sun bought 150 acres of land Palmer, a town of about 12,000 residents in Western Massachusetts.
At Tuesday’s hearing, a crowd of about 600 included many union members who wore orange T-shirts that said “Casinos Now, Jobs Now.”
And Mohegan Sun Chief Operating Officer, Jeffery Hartmann, is prepared to help fill their needs.
“At a resort facility, we’ll have jobs. Everyone from food and beverage workers to advertising,” said Hartmann.
While many look the the economic up-side casino gambling could bring to the state, critics pointed out a long list of problems with casinos. Everything from crime to compulsive gambling was discussed.
“What is the acceptable number of destroyed lives?” asked Robert K. Massie, the vice president of United to Stop Slots. “Even if compulsive gambling only affects 2 percent of a population, that’s 120,000 people in Massachusetts.”
