Pennsylvania officials are pleased that casino operator Las Vegas Sands has lived up to their promise to turn the Bethlehem casino site into a destination resort, after a long 18 month hiatus.
This week Sands Bethlehem Casino executives and city officials celebrated the re-groundbreaking of the stalled 300 room hotel tower that has created 350 new construction jobs and is expected to employ 100 people once opened.
The 300 room hotel should be completed by Memorial Day.
“This is an important piece of the overall revitalization of the overall Bethlehem Steel site” said Mayor John Callahan.
The casino now featured at the former steel site will soon be a full destination resort that the city is hoping will lure overnight guests to the area.
Additional plans include construction of a 3,000 seat concert and conference center that could break ground by the end of the year.
“We’re probably just a few months from making that happen,” said Mike Leven, president and chief operating officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp.
While there are still no concrete plans to begin work on the planned retail outlet at the site, Leven said the conference center could open by the end of 2011.
Gaming tables will also be added to the casinos slot machines later this summer.
