The Louisiana House of Representatives voted 82-1 today for new legislation that will require casinos and riverboat gambling operations to withhold gambling winnings from their customers if they owe back child support.
Sen. Nick Gautreaux, the orchestrator of the bill, can now go back to the Senate for an almost certain approval and then the bill will move on to the governor’s desk.
If Gov. Bobby Jindal signs this new legislation as expected, the measure would apply to gamblers who have a judgment against them for back child support and win more than $1,999.99 at a Louisiana casino.
The $1,200 figure comes from the federal government’s tax reporting laws that are already in place.
Rep. Robert Johnson, D-Marksville, the House handler of Gautreaux’s bill, says that data will be provided by the state Social Services Department will have to be given to casino operators and the responsibility will fall on the casinos themselves to enforce this action.
