The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe is looking to compete with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe to win the rights to build a casino in Massachusetts.
The Aquinnah tribe has proposed building a resort on 240 acres of land off of Interstate 195 as an alternative to the proposal made by the Mashpee tribe to build on a 300-acre site on the northern outskirts of Fall River.
The Mashpee casino proposal blocks development of a biotechnology park that was previously planned for the site, which leads Aquinnah leaders to argue that their proposal would be a better overall deal for the state.
“Fall River can have the BioPark and a resort-style destination casino,’’ said Naomi Carney, chairwoman of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Gaming Corp. and a member of the tribal council.
However lawmakers questioned the viability of the Aquinnah proposal since the tribe waived its right to build a casino on sovereign tribal land in an agreement it signed with the state in 1985.
The Aquinnah disagree on the legal standing and says that they intend to pursue construction of a casino regardless of approval from the state claiming that federal law gives them the right to build on tribal land even if state officials do not grant them a license to do so.
