Atlantic City’s casino industry is pleading with lawmakers. All eleven casinos in New Jersey teaming up to urge state legislators to stop or, at the very least, slow down efforts to amened state laws that would allow for the expansion of gaming options in the Garden State.
A bill in the state legislature is being considered that would allow casinos to offer betting on professional sports events.
The legislation would also let people in locations around the state go online to bet on Internet versions of poker, blackjack and other games.
Gambling groups oppose the bill. The Casino Association of New Jersey says the proposals would violate existing federal bans on sports and online betting.
They also feel that this idea would benefit offshore gambling websites, not New Jersey’s casinos.
“As the industry seeks to work with government to revitalize the economic engine that the Atlantic City casinos bring to the state of New Jersey, said association president Joe Corbo. “The last thing that the state needs at this time is to undermine the destination resort model by expanding gambling to other parts of the state.”
