A 32-year battle between the federal government and Long Island’s Shinnecock Indians is over after the Obama administration approved the tribe’s petition for recognition.

Now, with federal recognition in their pockets, the door is open for the Shinnecock’s bid to build a casino on its 800-acre reservation in Southampton, NY.

The tribe still faces a long road in front of them to get approval for a casino in which almost everyone wants anywhere but the Hamptons.

Many state and local government officials, as well as, some tribal leaders would prefer another location. Some believe a site in New York City or its suburbs would be more practical.

Most concerns have to do with accessibility issues. The Hamptons are already over-run with traffic problems in the summertime.

Another issue is that with federal recognition, the tribe can build a Class II casino on its land. This type of casino could have to be limited to video slot machines and table games with dealers would be prohibited.

Many want the tribe to build a more lucrative Class III casino, which could have table games, but would have to be built somewhere else.
