With Rhode Island’s Twin River and Newport Grand slot parlors looking to expand to full Vegas-style casinos, governor Donald Carcieri has raised some interesting questions.
While a new gambling bill has bill passed 62-12 and 21-14 in the House and Senate, respectfully, Carcieri has concerns with the Newport location.
Newport officials, including state lawmakers from the area of the seaside resort, have consistently opposed the expansion of gambling at Newport Grand.
“We have home-rule charters,” Carcieri said. “Every town controls its own affairs.”
He thinks that there is a possibility that the bill passed last week by the legislature may be unconstitutional. Carcieri also has “major concerns” with lawmakers’ motivation in reference to this new gambling legislation.
“It’s the talk in Massachusetts that precipitates all this,” Carcieri said. “If Massachusetts caves and puts in casinos or whatever, next it will be New Hampshire and next it will be Maine.”
