The North Carolina Tar Heels have won 43 ACC Championships, they have 17 Final Four appearances, and 5 National Championships in Men’s Basketball, their latest just a few short seasons ago in 2005, under coach Roy Williams.
That’s quiet an impressive resume, but their pedigree won’t earn them any points through this year’s NCAA Tournament. So how do the Tar Heels match-up against the rest of the South Regional Bracket?
North Carolina has a 28-4 record coming into the tournament, but let a chance at their 44th Conference Championship slip through their fingers when they lost to Florida State 73-70 in the semi-finals. The Seminoles went on to lose to Duke in the finals.
Odds makers are calling the number one seeded Tar Heels an obvious favorite to come out of the South with the line sitting at about -160. North Carolina does have some concerns about guard Ty Lawson’s health, but should have enough fire power to get through 16 seeded Radford, even if Lawson does not play. However there are no guarantees when Lawson does return.
The Tar Heels have not been consistent enough on defense to get through to the Championship Game in Detroit. Expect an upset at the hands of Oklahoma or if they get past the Sooners, Pitt in the Final Four.
