New Jersey lawmakers are proposing a voter referendum to decide if the state should allow sports and internet gambling as an attempt to combat Atlantic City’s dwindling gaming market.

Democratic legislators plan to place two questions on the November ballot to ask voters to decide if the state should be able to offer sports betting, and offer legal online versions of casino games such as blackjack, poker, roulette and other games of chance, provided that the federal ban is repealed.

“There are billions of dollars of gambling money that we’re leaving on the table,” said Sens. Raymond Lesniak, who represents a district in northern New Jersey.

Lesniak has filed a lawsuit against the federal government to overturn a ban on sports betting in all but four states, where sports betting is already legal.

Lesnick said that he is confident that the referendums can be prepared in time to get them on the statewide ballot this fall. If voters approve the constitutional amendment and the government does lift the ban, Atlantic City Casinos and racetracks hope the measure will help to place them back on top of the gaming industry.
