Despite the threat the Gulf of Mexico oil spill to the state’s tourism industry, Mississippi’s 30 casinos have boosted their winnings in the month of May.

The Mississippi State Tax Commission reported that the 11 casinos along the coat took in $95.4 million last month, up slightly from the $92.5 million won in May 2009.

While the beaches have avoided contamination so far, Mississippi has started a national marketing campaign to promote the state as a tourist destination. The $15 million campaign has been funded by BP PLC.

“The majority of the people who come here for gaming reasons never set foot on the beach,” Richard Forester, executive director of the Harrison County Tourism Commission said. “There’s no oil on the casino floor.”

The 19 casinos along the Mississippi River reported winnings of $107.9 million falling short of the $125 million won in the same period last year.
