This week, U.S. Rep. Scott Murphy is expected to introduce new legislation to clear-up the somewhat hazy laws surrounding online gambling in the United States.

Murphy feels that, while it is legal to place bets on the internet on horse races, the nations current laws on the subject are not clear.

The Congressman said it is a minor change to fix what could be a major problem for the foundering horse racing business in New York.

“This is a huge industry for us,” said Murphy. “We just want it clarified.”

In New York alone, the online betting in the horse racing industry is roughly a $200 million per year business.

Murphy fears that the revenue stream could be threatened by credit card companies’ lack of participation over legal concerns that would lead to less betting, thus creating more of a threat to the already cash starved racing industry.

Many supporters feel that anything to make it easier to place a bet is a good thing. Some think that betting on horse races should be as easy as buying a lottery ticket.
