It’s been six years since Massachusetts, like many other states, passed a bill banning smoking in workplaces, bars and restaurants.
Now, State Senate leaders are planning to back legislation that would allow smoking in new casinos proposed for the state.
The proposed gambling bill is drawing criticism from anti-smoking advocates, who say that it would put casino workers as well as customers at a health risk, while also upending the ban on smoking.
Under this new legislation, the state would license three casinos and allow smoking in up to 25 percent of gaming areas. The bill would require signs marking the smoking areas and the casinos would have to provide ventilation to minimize the effect of the smoke in these areas.
Many feel that banning smoking in casinos would drive much needed revenue to other states where smoking is allowed in gambling halls and slot parlors.
